Peak Season: When Disney Closes the Parks

Did you know that Disney will actually close the parks if they reach capacity? This typically happens during big holidays like the 4th of July, Christmas, New Year's Eve and Easter. During these peak times Magic Kingdom is most commonly the first park to close. This is not a big surprise considering it's the most iconic and well-known park, not to mention the busiest. Disney knows that the crowds will be large and as such will extend the park hours in anticipation of the larger crowds. They will also sometimes add Extra Magic Hours.

Give yourself extra time to get into the parks, especially Magic Kingdom which is a bit trickier if you're arriving by car.

Never fear, closing procedures do not mean that the park will be closed to everyone for whatever remains of the day. Disney will slow the number of guests allowed into the parks as they see that they are reaching max capacity. As guests inevitably leave the park throughout the day, more guests are allowed in.

If you are a Disney World Resort guest, Annual Passholder (minus your blackout dates), or guests with reservations at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, Harmony Barbershop or The Pirates League then you will be allowed to enter, unless, of course there is a complete park closure.

The first people who will not be allowed into the parks are going to be 1-day Park Ticket holders and cast members. I hear that sometimes just having FastPass+ reservations is enough to get you entrance during some of the closure phases.

If you do decide to go to the parks during these peak times then go early! The earlier you arrive the better. Wait times will be less first thing in the morning. Keep in mind that not only will lines for rides be longer but food stands and restaurants will be much busier. This is a great time to pack a lunch and snacks so that you don't have to stand in line forever for a meal.

Are you going for a particular stage or fireworks show? Then get your seats early! People will already be getting comfortable an hour before the shows so plan on finding and saving your spot at least that early.
