King Triton's Tip Tuesday: Extra Magic Hours

Extra Magic Hours are for those guests who are staying on site at a Disney Resort. In order to get on rides during Extra Magic Hours (EMHs) your MagicBand or Ticket Card will be scanned to verify that you are a Disney Resort Guest. If you are not a resort guest then you are allowed to remain in the park but not allowed on any rides or attractions.
In the past, Evening EMHs were great - you could get FastPasses during that time, it reduced wait times and there were fewer guests in the parks, especially when parks were open late. Morning EMHs tend to be more crowded than Evening EMHs. Now, however, due to Disney cutbacks several of these perks are no longer available. You can no longer get FastPasses during EMHs and the vast majority of eateries and shops are closed. Due to fewer cast members working rides, line management and loading isn't as efficient either.
On a recent trip, while staying on-site, my sister and I were going to stay during the evening EMHs at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. We were really disappointed to see that at Magic Kingdom most of the shops and eateries were closed. Although some of these closures were listed on the weekly Times Guide we did not think to check this before making our plans and were very disappointed when we had missed out on getting an evening snack. Sleepy Hollow was one of those not listed as an early closure on the Times Guide and there's no way we would have known beforehand.

Also, something to keep in mind when deciding whether to stay during EMHs is the resort transportation. In our experience during Peak Season and peak crowds you want to leave the park at least 30 minutes before park closing. This will keep you from leaving with the masses. However, if it's not Peak Season then you will most likely be okay staying until park closing.
